In response to requests from customers for more detailed lifecycle information to help plan and manage hardware and software deployments, Surface is offering more guidance on our driver and firmware updates.
This lifecycle policy covers drivers and firmware releases for Windows-based Surface devices. The lifecycle begins when a device is first released and concludes when Surface ceases publication of drivers and firmware updates on the End of Servicing date. The following sections define the lifecycle policy and End of Servicing dates.
Device support period. The device support period defines the period during which Surface will support driver and firmware updates for a device. The Device Support Period starts when a device is released. Surface devices will receive driver and firmware updates for at least 4 years from when the device was first released. In cases where the support duration is longer than 4 years, an updated end of servicing date will be published in advance of the date of last servicing.
OS version support. OS version support defines the operating system versions supported by Surface during the device support period. Surface devices will receive driver and firmware updates for Windows OS versions released in the prior 30 months. Surface won't support Windows OS versions earlier than the OS versions supported at device release. For the minimum supported OS version of your Surface device, see Surface supported operating systems.
Once the device support period is concluded at the End of Servicing Date, devices will continue to receive Windows OS feature and security updates in accordance with the Windows Lifecycle Policy as described on the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy support page.
Because updates are cumulative, when you install the latest update, you'll also get all the previous updates if your Surface doesn't have them already. Only updates that apply to Surface will be downloaded and installed.
Firmware update for Surface Type Cover and Surface Touch Cover improves functionality for both accessories and includes the ability to toggle function keys, new shortcuts, and helpful keyboard navigation improvements.
A major update to Windows RT was launched on October 17, 2013, called Windows RT 8.1. This update brought many improvements to the Surface, such as an overhauled Mail app, more Bing apps like Reading List, and OneDrive (updated from SkyDrive). It also brought support for larger tiles, a help and tips app, Internet Explorer 11, Outlook 2013 RT, changes to PC Settings, lock screen photo slideshow, infinitely re-sizable apps, a Start button, and speed improvements. Later, an update to Windows RT 8.1, dubbed Windows RT 8.1 Update[7] added a search button to the Start Screen, as well as the taskbar on the Modern UI, and a title bar for Modern UI apps.
Surface Platform Power Driver update (v2.0.716.0) adjusts the minimum charge current to address the case where the battery drains under the 0% level and will not charge, and enhances the overall system stability.
Surface 2 UEFI (v4.21.500.0) update enhances overall system stability, including boot and reboot scenarios, enhances compatibility with Surface Power Cover, and increases battery life when Surface 2 is not in use.
Audio Driver Set (v9.17.13.2819) and Display Driver Set (v9.17.13.2818) update provides enhanced support for external displays, improves the Miracast experience, and enhances the overall system stability while reducing power consumption in many scenarios.
It appears that Microsoft has finally rolled out its new update for Windows RT users, which was set for some time this month. We covered the news of the upcoming Windows 8.1 RT Update 3 back in July, and it has come to fruition.
Update: 9/16/2015: The update that brings the features is indeed KB3033055. You can read more about it on the Microsoft support page for KB3033055. Also, another visual aspect it brings is to the Login screen, Start screen, and other places in the UI is the user image in a circle, which is also similar to Windows 10.
To enable the Start menu, after installing the updates, right-click the taskbar and select Properties. Then check the box next to Use the Start menu instead of the Start screen and click OK. Then you will need to sign out and back in for the change.
