In 2004, sixteen years after their first film together, Yash Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan collaborated for a third time. Their romantic thriller, Veer Zaara, was a runaway box office hit and became one of the highest grossing films in India. The film tells the story of two lovers separated by circumstances which finally come together to find their way back to each other. It's a tale as old as time that transcends culture and language with universal themes that anyone can relate to: love, longing, sacrifice. The film was well received by critics, with the performances of the lead pair receiving unanimous praise. Critics praised the film for being a welcome departure from Yash Chopra's previous work which featured more lavish production values. The story of this film is based on an old Punjabi love legend called "Heer Ranjha" written by Waris Shah between 1777 and 1781. It is the story of Heer, an orphan who falls in love with her childhood friend Ranjha, only to have their relationship torn apart by circumstance. This legend has been retold in various formats over time including poetry, prose, drama and even Hollywood film starring Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit. "Veer Zaara"'s story is based on the legend of "Heer Ranjha" by Waris Shah which tells the story of two lovers, Heer (Shah Rukh Khan), the daughter of a wealthy Jat chief and Ranjha (Shah Rukh Khan), a poor Muslim shepherd. Heer's father wants her to marry his childhood friend, but she falls in love with Ranjha instead. When Heer's father discovers their relationship he exiles her to her maternal grandparent's home where she is kept under watchful eyes. Ranjha tries to rescue Heer but is unable to, and the story ends with Heer's death. During a playback of a song from the film, Shah Rukh Khan mentioned that the story was inspired by Waris Shah's "Heer Ranjha". The producer of the film found this story interesting, and decided to adapt it into a film. In an interview with Shah Rukh Khan, he said: "I had been reading Waris Shah's epic poem Heer Ranjha for years. I was fascinated with its magical tales of moonlight cruelty and mythical love between lovers separated by cruelty. One day, I asked Yashji (Chopra) if he would be interested in doing it. But he was busy making Veer-Zaara. So the idea went into the backburner for several years." "Veer Zaara" is Shah Rukh Khan's third collaboration with director-producer Yash Chopra after "Darr" (1993) and "Dil To Pagal Hai" (1997). The film featured Khan singing five songs. Before filming began, Khan spent time learning to sing indie music for the film. The film opened well at the box office, but not as well as other previous Yash Chopra productions. cfa1e77820
